What is a denture?

People wear dentures to replace lost or missing teeth so they can restore their mouth to enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence.

A complete or full denture is one which replaces all the natural teeth.

Partial dentures replace teeth that are missing, and are supported by your remaining teeth and mouth structures.

If you have gaps between your teeth, other teeth can move to take up some of the space, so you could end up with crooked or tilted teeth. This could affect the way you bite and damage other teeth.

Why should I wear dentures?

Dentures replace your teeth and allow you to eat comfortably and restore your smile to improve your confidence and self-esteem.

They are, however, removable and for some patients fixed options such as implants and bridges are more appealing. Please feel free to discuss any concerns that you may have about your missing teeth with our team.

What are dentures made of?

Dentures are made of either acrylic (plastic) or metal.

At your consultation your dentist will discuss all of the tooth replacement options, including dentures. If you decide that a denture is the right option for you they will discuss the different types of denture that are available for your case.

Will dentures make me look different?

Replacing lost or missing teeth is very good for your health and appearance. A complete or full denture replaces your natural teeth and gives support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person look older and by making a new denture you can, in essence, achieve the look of a facelift without the surgery!

Dentures can be made to closely match your natural teeth so that your appearance hardly changes. Modern dentures may even improve the look of your smile and help to fill out the appearance of your face.

How long do dentures last?

If you treat your dentures well, they should last several years. However, your dentures will need to be relined or re-made because of normal wear, or a change in the shape of your mouth.

Are dentures my only option?

No. Bridges and dental implants are other options to consider. Speak to your dentist at your consultation for more information.

Nowadays even people who are wearing complete dentures can have implants placed and then walk out on the same day with fixed teeth due to modern technology. This is known as Teeth in a Day
