So why is orthodontics so important? Why do I need it?

Never underestimate the power of a nice smile. A nice smile is not only beautiful, it also promotes good health:

  • Teeth that are straight and evenly spaced are easier to keep clean thus reducing the risk of tooth decay.
  • Correctly aligned teeth makes chewing more efficient which helps in proper digestion.
  • A well balanced and even bite also reduces the risks of excessive stress, headaches, and strain on your supporting bone and tissue.

Additional social benefits of a beautiful smile are also important. Lets face it we all love beautiful smiles: Correctly aligned teeth can boost self Confidence and help articulate clearer Speech.

Why a Clear Brace?

  • Aligners are nearly Invisible- straighten your teeth without anyone noticing.
  • Aligners are Comfortable- there are no wires or metal to cause mouth ulcers.
  • Aligners are Removable- for eating, drinking, dental care or other activities.
  • Better oral hygiene during treatment - brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth.
  • Usually cheaper than conventional train tracks.
  • Treatment duration often comparable, if not quicker than with fixed braces.

How does it work?

  • A series of aligners are custom made in a laboratory using advanced computer imaging technology.
  • You wear each aligner for 2-6 weeks depending on the system used before being replaced with the next one, until your teeth are straight.

Will it work for me?

  • If you have all your adult teeth (fully-erupted molars), most patients can be treated with a clear brace even if they have crowns or bridges.
  • Many common issues like crooked or crowded teeth, spaces between teeth and certain overbite and crossbite types can successfully be corrected.
  • However it is not for everyone and certain cases may be referred for fixed brace therapy.

Is this treatment only for adults?

  • No, you just need to have all your adult / permanent teeth (fully erupted molars).
  • Be committed to wearing your aligners at all times except for eating, drinking and cleaning.

How do I get started?

  • Following your initial consultation, we will discuss your goals, concerns and wishes.
  • A treatment plan will be formulated together, impressions and photographs will be taken.
  • With advanced computer technology a diagnostic cast will then be created so we can then show you a models of how your teeth could look, before you start your treatment. On acceptance of the final outcome we will authorize fabrication of the splints.

How long does the treatment take?

As with traditional braces, treatment times vary depending on the patient and how much movement is required. However, treatment time is generally about the same as traditional braces, between 4 and 18 months. Often patients find that treatment with positioners is faster than treatment with fixed braces.

How long do I have to wear the aligners?

  • The aligners should ideally be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day for the best results ie for eating, drinking and cleaning
  • Aligner should be changed as recommended as will vary from system to system however we advise review appointments every 8 weeks.

Are the aligners really Invisible?

  • The aligners are made from clear plastic, so they are nearly invisible.
  • Even when very close, most people will not notice you are straightening your teeth - unless you tell them!

Can I expect any side effects?

  • It is normal that you will only feel temporary discomfort when you wear the aligners for the first few days.
  • The smooth aligners are not harmful to the inside of your mouth, but you do feel pressure and this is a good sign that the aligners are working.
  • As with conventional treatments, you may feel a slight pressure at first.
  • Aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two.
  • Aligners can discolour with time thus it is important to keep them clean at all times.

Will my teeth move again after treatment?

Your dentist will provide retainers to help prevent your teeth from moving again after treatment. A retainer may be a clear, plastic aligner, or may be a permanent retainer attached to the inside surface of your teeth. Your dentist will discuss the options with you at the onset of treatment.

Is orthodontic alignment available on the NHS?

As of April 2006 only children falling into a defined category of treatment need, will be treated on the NHS. This means many children with milder forms of malocclusion but never the less uneven teeth are left untreated. Unfortunately Dental Sense is not funded by government to carry out orthodontic treatment, thus can only offer such treatments privately. Clear braces can treat the majority of orthodontic cases and with all their benefits we strongly advise you to consider a clear brace should the NHS not offer conventional braces to you or your family.
