Cosmetic (white) Fillings
As time passes, amalgam, or silver fillings can make the surrounding tooth appear grey and unsightly. Old mercury fillings can now be replaced by safer, modern tooth coloured filling materials that are not only highly aesthetic but also functional and durable.
The restorations are bonded, thus strengthening the remaining tooth, feel very natural and are colour-matched to the surrounding tooth, making them appear almost invisible. So if you are unhappy with your old silver filling why not ask one of our cosmetic dentists about upgrading them.
White fillings have always been considered less long lasting than silver amalgam fillings. But new materials are available with properties comparable to silver amalgam, and these have proved to be superior as they can bond to the existing tooth tissue. The life expectancy of any filling can depend greatly on where it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite. Your dentist can advise you on the life expectancy of your fillings, and which material is most appropriate.
For teeth which require large fillings, an inlay/ onlay or crown may be indicated.
